New concern about third COVID surge
Over the weekend images and reports of authorities in Miami Beach trying effortlessly to disperse crowds amid COVID-19 orders stole the spotlight in the United States. However, around the world countries continue to struggle with the virus even with the emergence of vaccines.
Europe, Brazil and India continue to face spiking numbers in COVID-19 positive cases creating a growing concern for U.S officials about a third surge.
According to Johns Hopkins University’s report last week, Germany is seeing spikes in cases that mirror January totals. The report also notes that Greece reported its highest case total of all on March 17th. Brazil is facing the same battle; two of their highest case totals were reports on March 17th and 19th. Overall, the South American Country reported more than 90K new COVID cases daily!
Today, Brazil is still struggling against the P.1 variant that originated in the country. According to health officials, the strain is more contagious and vaccines are less effective against I with an efficacy rate of roughly 50%.
Dr. Anthony Fauci said last week that the case totals in the United States have consistently followed Europe’s but occurred about three to five weeks after. Officials are concerned about a possible third surge, especially with events like Spring Break, Easter and Passover approaching. Fauci said the U.S. has plateaued about 50K new cases daily. According to Fauci, this number opens the country up for another surge.
